What is S.E.E.K. Camp?

SEEK Camp is a non-denominational Christian camp experience sponsored by the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. Children’s Camp is held at Bridgeport Camp and Conference Center. This 5 day, 4 night camp is composed of 50 campers (25 girls and 25 boys). The campers exhibit a wide variety of disabilities that range from mild to severe.

All activities are designed to accomodate the special needs of our campers. Each camper is encouraged and assisted by their counselor to participate in the camp community. SEEK Camp experiences are available for children ages 9 to 14, youth ages 15 to 20 and adults.

The campers enjoy daily activities of arts and crafts, music, recreation, swimming and worship. In addition, each evening includes special activities such as horse back riding, ventriloquist shows, talent shows, a dance and other fun filled events.

SEEK Camp is a unique opportunity for campers who are physically and/or mentally challenged to learn about love, friendship, sharing, caring and living in a Christian community.

The cost of SEEK Camp is $215 which includes a camp T-Shirt and a video. Camper acceptance is based on a first come first serve basis. The majority of the cost associated with the camp is a result of the high staff to camper ratio.

The all-volunteer staff is made up of three camp directors, two registered nurses, a camp pastor, 50 cabin counselors as well as recreation, music and art coordinators. Also involved are the employees provided by Bridgeport Camp and Conference Center. All staff complete an in-service training, application process and background check.

Counselors are paired with one camper each day. The needs of the campers vary from just hanging out to taking care of their most personal needs. A counselor is someone who is mature, has a heart for serving and is willing to put the world aside for one week and devote themselves to serve their camper no matter what the cost. Youth counselors must be involved in a local church (of any denomination) and have a church ministry staff sign their application.

SEEK Camp is a registered charity under Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

In the summer of 1980, about 13 children, youth and their counselors participated in the first North Texas Conference S.E.E.K. Camp. In 1983 the first adult camp was held. These were camp opportunities for persons with special needs. Things have grown. This summer the children's camp will host 60 campers (with a waiting list) and 60+ staff. The youth camp will host about 60 campers and 30 staff. The middle school, high school and adult camps will host about 40 campers and 30 staff. The campers will be children, youth and adults with all kinds of personalities and abilities who live with assorted challenges: mental retardation, ADHD, emotional illnesses, Down Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, etc.

The goal of S.E.E.K. Camp is to provide a summer camp opportunity for persons who need special assistance, which can't be provided by other camps, to provide respite for parents and siblings, and to provide a humbling and growing experience to the camp staff.

We are looking for golfers, hole sponsors and donations to help offset some of the costs and expenses for the campers and the volunteer staff. Your support of this camp is needed and greatly appreciated.

Our golf tournament this year will be on Monday, May 16, 2011 at The Golf Club at McKinney. Last year we had 59 golfers and were able to raise approximately $6,200.00. Through your support and the support of others, we not only want to achieve last year's goal, but exceed it.

Thank you for your consideration.
